A phone and mobile data
This gift could provide a basic smart phone and data package for a young refugee who is self-isolating, giving a lifeline to connect them to crucial support services, speak to loved ones and support their mental wellbeing.
When the coronavirus pandemic first hit, our staff set up a women-only online group for young refugees to cope. However, our teams soon realised that many had connectivity issues, for example, no Wi-Fi, data or even a smartphone, let alone a laptop – all the things that keep you connected. One of the young women who helped set up the new online sessions is Maryam.
Originally from Afghanistan, Maryam and her family moved to the UK at the end of 2019 and were granted refugee status just before lockdown.
“When I first joined [the Red Cross groups] there was only me, one girl. But now with the online groups, all girls are talking to each other. ...I'm really, really so happy to be with the Red Cross team, and especially with the woman's discussion team... I hope other girls are the same."
